Om: Rethinking Choreography
Choreographer and writer Jonathan Burrows shares some of his current thinking on choreography, wondering what it is, where it’s located, and how people might experience it. The presentation draws upon his recent research with dramaturge Bojana Cvejić, looking at new paradigms in neuroscience and cognitive studies on the relationship between sequenced movement and perception. At the heart of this work is the question whether we might think of choreography not as an external force that colonises and organises the moving body, but as a felt experience shared by all dancers.
Burrows is a choreographer whose main focus is a long collaboration with the composer Matteo Fargion, with whom he is currently developing a performance with the Bøler Samvirkelag women’s collective in Oslo, to be premiered at the Dansens Hus Oslo 13th to 16th May 2025. He is the author of ‘A Choreographer’s Handbook’ (Routledge 2010/24) and ‘Writing Dance’ (Varamo Press 2022), and is currently Associate Professor at the Centre for Dance Research, Coventry University.
